iThrive Treatment Philosophy

Treatment Philosophy

Our philosophy of treatment is built on the belief that Final Freedom is achieved when clinical excellence and spiritual depth are unified. Our framework is defined by a Christ-centered approach to the 12 Steps, a robust clinical integration of Scripture, and a practical emphasis on spiritual and relational accountability.

Jesus delineates four parts of us in Mark 12:30-31, this tells us we must take a holistic approach to healing our disordered desires and return them to God. Which will bring healing to all or our earthly relationships, starting with our partners/family and moving outward to all our neighbors.

  • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Philosophy of Treatment: A Framework for Integrated Freedom

1. The Therapeutic Framework: Vision, Intention, and Means

Our approach utilizes Dallas Willard’s "Golden Triangle" of spiritual transformation as its foundational scaffolding. We believe that change occurs through the dynamic interaction of three components:

  • Vision: Clarifying who you are becoming in Christ and the life of freedom you desire.
  • Intention: Making a deliberate, daily choice to cooperate with God rather than merely wishing for change.
  • Means: Engaging in concrete spiritual practices, clinical tools, and relational supports that facilitate growth.

This framework moves beyond "white-knuckling" behavior and instead focuses on retraining the heart and mind through consistent, grace-filled practice.

2. The Role of Scripture: An Ally, Not a Shortcut

Scripture is integrated into our work as a vital clinical tool, not as a replacement for evidence-based therapy. Our use of Scripture is characterized by three core principles:

  • Client-Led & Consensual: We always seek explicit permission and explore your spiritual history to ensure Scripture is used in a way that is healing rather than re-traumatizing.
  • Clinically Targeted: Verses are selected to specifically address your treatment goals (e.g., using identity-focused passages to counter toxic shame or Scripture for anxiety, or fear, etc.).
  • Experiential & Practical: We move beyond quoting verses to experiencing them through guided reflection, Scripture-based mindfulness, and prayer journaling to reinforce cognitive and emotional change.

3. Spiritual Warfare: Truth vs. Accusation

While our primary focus is on emotional regulation and behavioral change, we recognize the spiritual dimension of the struggle. Our approach to spiritual warfare is grounded in the Externalization of Shame:

  • The Accuser vs. The Advocate: We distinguish between the "conviction" of the Holy Spirit (which leads to hope and restoration) and the "condemnation" of the accuser (which leads to toxic shame and isolation).
  • The Three-Chair Model: We utilize Gestalt-style exercises to help you hear the accusing voice of shame, externalize it, and then allow the truth of Jesus to answer those accusations directly.
  • Warfare Prayer and Referrals: We also pray for our clients in session for God to bring deliverance and freedom in areas of generational curses, and any other areas they may have invited in evil, knowingly or unknowingly. The battle is against the world, the flesh and the devil, but we have a God who has overcome all of these and will help us when we ask. We also refer out to a specialized ministry who specializes in deliverance.

4. Accountability and Interdependence

We believe that isolation is the fuel of addiction, while connection is the environment of healing.

  • Moving from "I" to "We": The first step of our 12-step adaptation for sexual addiction is an admission of powerlessness and a shift toward interdependence on God and Community.
  • Watch and Pray: Following Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 26:41, we emphasize building accountability teams that are also prayer teams—people who help you "watch" for triggers and "pray" for strength in moments of weakness.
  • Fences, Not Prisons: We implement "fences" (practical boundaries - locations, people, technology) not as punishment, but as protective structures that keep the "garden" of your recovery safe while you do the deeper internal work.

Key Summary: This approach requires a commitment to rigorous honesty—especially regarding triggers, slips, and the emotional states that precede them—to ensure the clinical and spiritual tools can be effectively applied.
